Background of the study
This study examines policy measures aimed at standardizing Efik language media in Calabar, a city with deep cultural and linguistic roots. With the increasing digitization of media platforms and the need for cultural preservation, policymakers have implemented strategies to standardize Efik language usage across newspapers, radio, television, and online platforms (Abasi, 2023). Historically, Efik media have been pivotal in transmitting cultural narratives and local traditions, yet inconsistencies in language use have sometimes compromised message clarity. Recent policy reforms have sought to introduce uniform guidelines for spelling, grammar, and stylistic presentation in Efik media, thereby fostering greater coherence and professional standards (Etim, 2024). This study reviews these measures, drawing on content analysis of media outputs and interviews with media practitioners and language experts. The discussion highlights the dynamic interplay between traditional language practices and modern media demands, stressing the importance of standardized language in enhancing public communication and preserving cultural identity. The research further explores how these policies reconcile the need for creative expression with formal language norms, providing a critical lens through which to assess the success and limitations of current standardization efforts (Abasi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the implementation of policy measures, Efik language media in Calabar continue to face challenges related to inconsistent application of standardized norms. Variations in orthography and stylistic choices persist, leading to public confusion and diminished credibility of media outputs (Etim, 2024). The rapid evolution of digital media further complicates adherence to traditional standards, and there is limited empirical evidence regarding the long-term impact of these policies on media quality. This study aims to identify the gaps between policy formulation and actual media practice, while exploring the constraints that media organizations encounter in fully implementing standardized guidelines (Abasi, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

To examine the current policy measures for Efik language media standardization in Calabar.

To identify challenges in the implementation of these measures.

To recommend strategies to enhance uniformity in Efik media content.

Research questions:

What policy measures have been introduced to standardize Efik language media?

How effectively are these policies implemented in practice?

What strategies can improve standardization in Efik media outputs?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it critically evaluates the effectiveness of policy measures for Efik language media standardization in Calabar. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, media practitioners, and cultural advocates, offering recommendations that can lead to enhanced clarity and consistency in media communications. By addressing the identified gaps, the study contributes to the preservation of the Efik language and cultural heritage, ensuring that media outputs reflect both professional standards and traditional values (Abasi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the examination of policy measures for Efik language media standardization in Calabar, focusing solely on media content and policy analysis.

Definitions of terms:

Standardization: The process of implementing uniform language guidelines.

Media: Channels of communication such as radio, television, and online platforms.

Orthography: The conventional spelling system of a language.
